I loved every minute of this audio book and raced through it in record time. The bond between them grows as those looking for them - both the criminals and the police - close in. Gradually, father and daughter get to know each other, as Nate trains Polly so she can defend herself and teaches her how to rob so they can support themselves. Nate already found his ex-wife and her new husband dead in their home, so he grabs Polly and goes on the run to keep her safe. Nate made some powerful enemies in prison, and now there are hits out on him, his ex-wife, and his daughter. It soon becomes clear that they are both in danger. Nate has been in prison for years, but now - without warning - he's here to pick Polly up. I recently listened to this original and suspenseful book on audio, and I absolutely loved it.Įleven-year old Polly hasn't seen her father in more than five years, but she recognizes him instantly when he shows up at her school at the end of the day he has the same eyes as Polly, a faded blue color her mother calls gunfighter eyes. It’s that delusion that triggers a violent and tragic explosion by the end of the play. It’s played out via the play’s thematic motif of the three-card monte scam that Booth is desperate to learn. On the otherhand, Booth channels his hurt into delusion. Linc tries to sweep feelings under the rug and move on with his life. While they each share the same abandonment issues, they each deal with them in different ways. Linc is still haunted by his divorce from his first wife, Cookie, while Booth is holding onto hope that his ex-lover, Grace, wants him back. Their parents walked out on them as teenagers, a fact that reveals itself in more detail in the second act. What Hawkins and Abdul-Mateen II do best is manifest the long-term effects of abandonment. Scenes like Linc scaring Booth after coming home in white face as Abe Lincoln and Booth removing his coat to unload two full suits he boosted are displayed so realistically that you laugh because you can relate. The play’s funny moments work so well because they aren’t played off as heavy-handed gags. Corey Hawkins and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II fully immerse themselves in their characters in “Topdog/Underdog.” (Photo by Marc J. I am so pleased to be able to make Lear, with its incredible imagery and drama, available in this format. I think the graphic novel form is a perfect bridge between the printed word and theatrical performance. Shakespeare’s plays were meant to be performed, and yet their greatness rests as much on their merits as literature – on the experience they give a reader – as on their theatrical power. 1, 2010 Hinds adds another magnificent adaptation to his oeuvre ( King Lear, 2009, etc.) with this stunning graphic retelling of Homer’s epic. There's another important reason I felt this would make a great graphic novel. adapted by Gareth Hinds & illustrated by Gareth Hinds RELEASE DATE: Oct. The storm, for example, is almost a character in its own right, and demands a convincing representation. However, it tends not to be performed as often as some of his other great tragedies such as Hamlet or Romeo and Juliet, perhaps because it's difficult to do justice to some of the descriptions in a theatrical production. Lear is generally considered to be one of Shakespeare's greatest masterpieces. The only differences between the Candlewick and self-published editions are the cover designs, the weight of the paper (Candlewick's is slightly heavier), and the typeface (mine is cursive script, theirs is a more "normal" font), plus a few very minor copyedits of the text.Īmazon also has extensive samples of the Candlewick edition, including front matter and footnotes. The self-published edition is now officially out of print. Like Beowulf, this book was first self-published and later re-issued by Candlewick Press. It’s rare to see high-value men under the age of thirty. I’ll do so with reference to basic psychology and wisdom from some of the greatest men to share it. In this article, I’ll identify traits that make a high-value man and how to achieve them. Not only are they alpha, but they’re also well-rounded in all other aspects of their life. High-value men are outliers in this sense. Maybe they’re jacked or wealthy or famous. Alpha men are usually at the top of the sexual hierarchy. It’s important to distinguish the difference between alpha and high-value. These guys aren’t necessarily young, but they’re jacked, wealthy, driven, and most of all – they live life on their own terms. Even the Aussie guy behind the RealSolBrah Instagram account makes the cut. It’s guys like Richard Cooper, Connor McGregor, Mark Wahlberg, or Greg Gallagher.
